RAKSHABANDHAN CELEBRATION

Rakshabandhan, popularly known as Rakhi, is an occasion of quite some importance in Hindu culture. Said to have its origin in the sacred Hindu texts or the Puranas, the rakhi is a thread that sisters tie around the wrists of their brothers which intertwine both in a sacred bond of duty, honour, love and protection. The rakhi, more than being just an ornament, is thus a symbolic representation of the protection that a brother offers his sister.

Taking this idea one step further, Behala Sujan Social Welfare Society did something remarkable: on 9th August 2025, they organized a rakhi ceremony where the students of their coaching centre, Anandapathshala tied rakhis to passersby and bystanders. What is more interesting, perhaps, is the fact that each of these rakhis was handmade by the students of this centre; aided by the female members of the organization, the students made around 250 rakhis with enthusiasm and exuberance. In this context, it must be mentioned that Anandapathshala, situated at Sarsuna’s Sarkarhat, Kamarpapa area, is an institution where underprivileged children are given tuitions on various subjects like Mathematics, the Sciences, English, Geography, History; not only this, but they are also encouraged to partake in several extra-curricular activities such as dancing, drawing and crafts, so on and so forth. Additionally, since this is an age in which everything is getting increasingly more digitized as the days proceed, Anandapathshala also focuses on the computer literacy of its children, thereby aiming at a holistic growth and development of its pupils. The Rakshabandhan event, which was attended by Shri Rupak Ganguly, the honourable counsellor of Ward No. 121, involved not only the tying of those handmade rakhis to said passersby, but also the distribution of sweets among them. This was the first time that such an event was organized by Behala Sujan and it was a roaring success.

In the society that we are a part of today, events like this foster goodwill and a sense of fraternal piety among the individuals, both of which help them become responsible citizens of the society. Taking the sacred occasion of Rakshabandhan to a social dimension, what Behala Sujan Social Welfare Society is essentially tying the entire society in bonds of fraternal love, duty and protection, which is quite a commendable thing to do in today’s times. These events stand as testaments of the fact that as individuals of the society, our actions must always be aimed towards doing things that enrich it, giving the hope of a better society in the future.
